Gingrich loses more staff, mindless speculation to follow

What, you thought I’d miss a chance to speculate mindlessly? The story:

APNewsBreak: Gingrich campaign fundraisers quit
ATLANTA — Newt Gingrich’s top two fundraising advisers resigned on Tuesday, and officials said the Republican candidate’s hobbling presidential campaign carried more than $1 million in debt.
The departures of fundraising director Jody Thomas and fundraising consultant Mary Heitman were the latest blow for the former House speaker who watched 16 top advisers abandon his campaign en masse earlier this month, partly because of what people familiar with the campaign spending described as a dire financial situation.

The funny part is: everybody seems to agree that Gingrich is a really smart guy who’s done great things for conservatism and the GOP, but who doesn’t seem to have the first clue about running a presidential campaign.
Those two things do not go together. Seems to me you can either be an uber-smart-and-experienced longknife pol or not have the first clue about running a presidential campaign. Not both.
So allow me to suggest an alternative:

  • Gingrich saw that other candidates were sucking up too much of that good ol’ fashioned novelty and momentum, whereas he is too old a hand to have much of either going in.
  • Seeing this, he realized that he needed to change his campaign dynamics.
  • Having decided that, he engineered these walkouts in order to give his campaign the illusion of “spiraling out of control.”
  • Having done that, he is now in perfect position to become “The Comeback Kid.”

Hey, it’s a longshot, but so is becoming President.
Note: this mindless speculation does not constitute a TrogloEndorsement. Me, I’m kinda looking forward to the “Hey, where’s Perry?” tie-ins.
